Uncategorized Aug 12, 2023

This week at TBVS, we talked about getting organized. After all, you can’t be a hero with a hook and a happy ending if you’re a… hot mess.

Getting organized with these tips will help you stay clear, concise and compelling.

  1. Get ahead of your listeners by using these questions to structure your talk.
  2. Help your listeners digest information by organizing them into topics and subtopics.

OMG YOU HAVE A MEETING: PART 2

Uncategorized Aug 05, 2023

If there’s one thing that’s always on our calendars, it’s that upcoming meeting that’s stressing us out.

That’s why I’ve come up with some tips and tricks for you to take in with you so that you enter feeling strong and leave feeling stronger.

  1. You might be thinking it’s impossible to prepare for a meeting given that this is likely going to be a dialogue and you have no idea how the other person will respond, but it’s worth it!
  2. Leading a meeting can trick us into thinking we have to do all the talking or fill all the silence or else we seem ineffective, but listening is the key to productivity.
  3. Finally, let other people get a word in, for Pete’s sake.

HOW TO MOVE 101

Uncategorized Jul 29, 2023

Up until this week, we’ve talked a lot about what to say and how to say it, but unless you’re doing a podcast or confessing to your local priest, you still need to think about what to do with that bod.

After all, your listeners are likely not… just listening. They’re watching you, too. Using your space is going to be paramount to keeping them engaged.

  1. OK, but let’s not go crazy. Let’s talk about being still first.
  2. There’s always the question, “What do I do with my hands?” You might be relieved to hear this answer.
  3. Blocking is basically choreography, and there’s a way to block your talk that won’t distract your listener from what you’re saying.

SIX KEY COMPONENTS OF A COMPELLING STORY

Uncategorized Jul 22, 2023

This week I shared one of my favorite series of tips on socials, 6 Key Components of a Compelling Story, and I want to make sure you didn’t miss out!

As I said last week, there is a science to storytelling, and we learned the formula when we were small children. There’s a reason why our ears perk up when we hear the words, “Once upon a time!”

  1. The first three components are essential to every beginning, and if they ain’t there, they won’t care.
  2. Everybody loves drama, so give the people what they want: a conflict.
  3. Every protagonist needs an epiphany or growth, and so does your talk.

BE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY WITH BETTER STORYTELLING

Uncategorized Jul 15, 2023

Picture this. You’re at a party. Or at the water cooler. Or maybe you’re engaging in after-work libations with coworkers. It’s a lively conversation, but something makes everyone scatter in all directions. And unfortunately it wasn’t silent, but it was deadly: your boring, boring, BORING story.

Storytelling is an art, but it’s also a science.

This week at TBVS, I shared some tips and tricks for making your stories worthy of an HBO mini-series.

  1. Sometimes there’s info that’s needed before the “Once upon a time” for people to stay with you. Watch this video to see why.
  2. Have you ever been mid-story and you realize this is going off the rails real fast? Learn how to save a story and come out a hero.
  3. Take a sneak peek at next week’s content: the holy grail, a formula for great storytelling!

HOW TO TALK: 101

Uncategorized Jul 01, 2023

Hey folks!

As speakers, we can sometimes get so caught up in what we’re saying, that we forget that the magic is really in how we say it.

To deliver our messages in an engaging, inspiring and memorable way, variation is key.

This week at TBVS, I shared some tips and tricks for using variation to strengthen your communication. If you missed them, take a look at these videos that I made just for you!

  1. When we’re presenting or saying something important, we tend to think that speaking slowly is the way to go, but this could be what’s putting your peeps to sleep.
  2. Get the secret sauce for speed.
  3. Playing around with which words to emphasize can help you steer clear of a monotone delivery, and, bonus, it can also help you keep it fresh as a presenter!

OMG! YOU HAVE A MEETING!

OMG! YOU HAVE A MEETING!

Let’s face it. Upcoming meetings can be … freaky.  Especially when we’re the ones leading.

What will happen?

What will I say?

What will THEY say?

How should I say it?

I’ll just wing it.

This week at TBVS, I shared some helpful tips for what to do before, during and after your meeting so you can walk in feeling in control and walk out feeling productive. If you missed them, here they are!

  1. They say 90% of it is just showing up. So if that's the case, you need to watch this video about getting out of your head and into the room so your ideas have a fighting chance.
  2. Sometimes it’s better to just get to the point. There. I said it.
  3. It's not really about you; it's about them. Instead of using your energy to worry about what you're going to say at your meeting, ask yourself these 3 questions to help you get a grip on how to present your ideas in a way that will be...
